A new variant of Mpox has caused another outbreak of Mpox in Gauteng, reported News24 (5 April 2025).
Seven cases have been reported in February and March. Since June 2022, when the first outbreak of Mpox was recorded in Gauteng, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has recorded 31 cases across the country.
Mpox is mostly transmitted through skin-to-skin contact with someone who had developed the virus.
According to the World Health Organisation, (WHO), more than 130 000 cases of Mpox and 300 deaths have been reported in 131 countries.
