South Africa’s sugary drink addiction fuels diabetes crisis’

The average South African adult consumes 2.3kg of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) per week, more than three times the global average, according to a recent global study. SSBs, defined as drinks with over 50 calories and added sugars, contribute to various health problems. –

South Africa ranks second among the world’s 30 most populous countries in sugary drink consumption.
Ways to solve the problem include: Tax reform: Discouraging unhealthy food choices through taxation;
Incentivising healthy eating: Promoting affordable and accessible healthy food options;
Public health campaigns: Raising awareness about the health risks of excessive sugar intake; and Increased screening: Improving access to T2D screening and early diagnosis.
