Global healthcare worker migration crisis escalates

15 Apr 2026

The World Health Organisation (WHO) predicts a global shortfall of 11m health workers by 2030. Africa is expected to bear the brunt of this, with a predicted shortage of 5 to 6m workers. – The Conversation (14 April 2026)
Most African countries fall below the recommended workforce threshold, while wealthy nations rely heavily on foreign-trained staff. Migration is no longer just about individual choice but reflects systemic extraction rooted in historical inequalities. Global power dynamics undervalue African training and encourage outward migration. Addressing the crisis requires local investment in working conditions, reduced reliance on international recruitment by wealthy countries and recognition of Global South expertise. Sustainable solutions depend on ending a system where rich nations benefit from Africa’s losses.
