Africa must take charge in strengthening the resilience of its health financing, while strategically weaning itself off external funding that is becoming less reliable, he said.
The US government’s announcement earlier this year of a suspension and review of all aid (PEPFAR), left a nearly $3bn hole in its $6bn pledge to the Global Fund for 2023-2025, reported

Meanwhile, European nations have also been cutting official development assistance and redirecting funds to meet domestic priorities. This reduction in external support, Godongwana argued, signals the end of an era.
To address Africa’s crises requires a new mindset that includes global co operation, more effective global finance for investment and economic transformation in Africa.
The prospect of a multipolar world presents the African continent with opportunities to break free from old modes of development and trade, said Godongwana.
