Bonitas-Medscheme row threatens jobs

19 Mar 2026

The dispute between Medscheme and Bonitas Medical Fund could place up to 5 000 jobs at risk, according to Paul Hanratty, CEO of Sanlam. Sanlam owns Medscheme through its majority stake of 60 % in AfroCentric. While Hanratty described the conflict as financially manageable, he warned of severe human consequences if Medscheme loses its Bonitas contract, which accounts for about 40% of its revenue. – MedicalBrief (19 March 2026)
Bonitas Medical Fund has already appointed Momentum Health as its new administrator, effective 1 June, with Private Health Administrators handling managed care services. Medscheme, which has served Bonitas since 1982, is challenging the tender process in the Gauteng High Court, alleging irregularities and conflicts of interest.
Meanwhile, the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) launched an investigation into Bonitas regarding the awarding of contracts. The outcome of both the legal case and regulatory probe will likely determine the future of thousands of jobs within AfroCentric and Medscheme.
