Unions demand lower premium increase from GEMS

GEMS, SA’s largest medical scheme for public servants, is facing increased pressure from unions,including the Public Servants Association (PSA) and the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu), after a 13.4% hike in its premiums this year. – Business Day (5 August 2025) The average increase for 2024 was 9.5%
According to Stan Moloabi, Principal Officer for GEMS, the scheme will work hard to come up with an increase, projected to be around 8.5%, that “considers the interests of the member while management protects the financial sustainability of the scheme”.
