Healthcare worker shortages demand bolder leadership

28 Oct 2026

SA’s healthcare worker shortages are arguably the country's biggest healthcare story, yet Government leaders have failed to tackle them, according to an editorial in Spotlight (23 October 2026).
Newly qualified doctors are struggling to find employment despite persistent shortages of medical professionals in public hospitals and clinics. According to the editorial many protesting doctors entered medicine to serve the public and escape poverty but now face an uncertain future.
While provincial health departments cite financial constraints and austerity, the editorial argues that a lack of vision and leadership is also responsible. It proposes several measures to address the crisis. These include a new agreement between Government and labour to exchange additional posts for lower salary increases among higher-paid healthcare workers and healthcare funding to be based on actual service needs rather than historical allocations, alongside stronger action against corruption, mismanagement and poor governance. Departments must demonstrate that additional funding will be used effectively.
