Minister of Health denies shift in ANC’s NHI policy

14 Jan 2025

On 14 Jan News24 reported that Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi dismissed claims that the African National Congress (ANC) has altered its stance on the National Health Insurance (NHI), saying that neither the ANC nor the government has such a plan.

This follows recent reports suggesting a potential policy shift. The reports alleged that the ANC planned to propose compulsory medical scheme membership for all employees.”
It also proposed that the NHI would directly compete with the private healthcare sector by offering more affordable options. This aligns with a proposal previously made by the Hospital Association of South Africa (HASA).
