Project launched to tackle mental health treatment

05 May 2025

According to the SA Depression and Anxiety Group 90% of uninsured South Africans in need of mental health services cannot access appropriate care due to a chronic shortage of mental health professionals, the misallocation of already scarce resources and a lack of funds that disproportionately favours hospital-based treatment over crucial community-based prevention and care. – Business Times (4 May 2025)
“Mental health disorders now account for 13.8% of the national disease burden – more than HIV/Aids or musculoskeletal disorders – yet only a meagre 5% of the national health budget is allocated to mental health.
“Against this backdrop, the Foundation for Professional Development (FPD) has launched a project to tackle the mental health treatment gap and youth unemployment. The programme trains young people, previously unemployed or excluded from the job market, to become Interpersonal Counselling (IPC) counsellors.
“Once certified, IPC counsellors are strategically deployed in community settings, NGOs, clinics, and workplaces where the need is greatest, ensuring services are accessible and close to those who need them most.”
