The ANC plans to reveal a compromise proposal for NHI at the first Cabinet lekgotla to achieve universal healthcare without jeopardising private medical schemes, reported City Press (12 Jan 2025).
“This proposal is inspired by a prior model suggested by the Hospital Association of South Africa (HASA).
According to the new model, medical coverage will be mandatory for all formally employed South Africans. Government would compete with private medical schemes by offering more affordable insurance options through the NHI.
“Unemployed citizens and those unable to afford medical insurance would continue to receive care at state hospitals, maintaining the current support structure for vulnerable populations.
“The ANC’s National Executive Committee will review the compromise proposal this week before formally presenting it at the Cabinet lekgotla.”
