The South African Medical Association (SAMA), representing approximately 12,000 doctors, announced that it intends to contest the National Health Insurance (NHI) Act in the Pretoria High Court, reported Business Day (2 April 2025).
This follows SAMA’s criticism, calling the Act “deeply flawed,” warning that its implementation could jeopardise SA’s healthcare system.
Affordability and constitutional rights William Oosthuizen, SAMA’s legal head, said the act is financially unviable and violates constitutional rights.
‘SAMAS’s vice-chair, Ames Dhai, reiterated concerns regarding public health governance, emphasising that substantial healthcare reform is crucial before considering the NHI as a feasible solution.”
However, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi argues that the act is essential for rescuing South Africa’s healthcare system.
