‘Infection prevention and control spending rises as drug resistance grows’

SA’s rising antimicrobial resistance is driving greater investment in hospital infection prevention and control. – SA Today (7 Oct 2026)
The hospital supplies market is expected to grow from USD0.96bn in 2025 to USD1.39bn by 2031, with sterilisation and disinfectant equipment among the fastest-growing segments.
However, spending has not resolved major gaps. Almost 75% of Klebsiella pneumoniae bloodstream isolates were ESBL-producing in 2023, while infection-control compliance can be as low as 11% because of staff shortages, poor infrastructure, weak supply chains and inadequate training.
