Gauteng Health released an urgent warning following the rise in malaria cases and deaths in the province, reported TimesLive (20 April 2026).
Gauteng residents’ travels to malaria-endemic regions during the festive seasons are regarded as one of the factors responsible for the high rates of transmission. The regions include Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces (South Africa), Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
Although the illness is preventable and treatable, delay in seeking treatment is the major contributing factor leading to the increase in the death rates in the first quarter of 2026.
