20 Jan 2025

South Africans considering to lose weight may choose from awide range of options ranging from viral food trends on social media to the rise of weight-loss injections and personalised nutrition plans.
“The popularity of diabetes drugs like Ozempic for weight loss has surged, raising concerns among dietitians. While these medications can effectively suppress appetite, they are not a sustainable solution,” reported TimesLive (17 January 2025)
“Hyper-personalised nutrition, including DNA-based recommendations, is gaining traction. While these technologies offer tailored insights, dietitians caution against over-reliance.”
Dietitian Phozia Jansen warned that obesity is a complex chronic disease, and medications on their own, are not a sustainable weight-loss solution.
“Jansen advises that it is essential to fact-check information with qualified professionals and approach social media trends critically.”
