Discovery Health criticised the CMS appointed panel's findings as "flawed in methodology" and based on "unscientific assumptions and a misinterpretation of complex data". – Business Day (9 July 2025).
The final report, handed to Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, asserted that Discovery, Medscheme and the Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS) used procedurally unfair systems that disproportionately penalised black professionals.
In the scheme’s reaction Discovery argued that the inquiry had depended on "a flawed and simplistic statistical analysis by a single expert" and ignored comprehensive submissions from a range of distinguished local and international experts. The scheme submitted 14 detailed submissions to the panel since the inquiry's inception in 2019.
Ron Whelan, CEO of Discovery Health, confirmed that the company will review the report and is considering subsequent actions.
