Non-invasive colon cancer gas test could speed diagnosis and save lives

Using metal-oxide sensors and machine learning, the system aims to distinguish cancer, precancerous lesions and healthy cases within about 10 minutes. The approach could help prioritise high-risk patients for colonoscopy, easing bottlenecks. This is particularly relevant in South Africa, where 60–70% of cases are diagnosed late and waiting lists can stretch for months. Although still in development and requiring clinical trials and regulatory approval, the test could enable faster triage, expand screening and improve early detection outcomes.
