SAHPRA approves HIV prevention injection

28 Oct 2025

The SA Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) announced the approval of Lenacapavir, a twice-yearly jab which provides six months of protection against HIV, reported Spotlight (October 2025)
“SAHPRA CEO, Dr Boitumelo Semete-Makokotlela, said the registration of Lenacapavir is a game changer, given the high prevalence rate of HIV in SA.”
The jab is specified for "adults and adolescents who weigh at least 35 kg, are HIV negative, and are at risk of getting HIV".
“The next hurdle is approval from South Africa’s National Essential Medicines List Committee (NEMLC) to clear the jab for public sector procurement.”
