SA to roll out twice-yearly HIV prevention jab

29 Aug 2025

The Department of Health announced plans to make a new, twice-yearly anti-HIV injection, lenacapavir, available in public clinics in 2026, reported Bhekisisa (28 August 2025)
The jab will be introduced at more than 300 government clinics located in health districts with the highest rates of new HIV infections, to approximately 456,396 people over two years.
“Unlike existing oral PrEP, which requires taking a pill every day, Lenacapavir is administered as an injection just once every six months.
The initial phase of the programme will be funded by a R513m allocation from SA’s R7.1bn grant from the Global Fund for HIV, TB and Malaria.
