Gauteng Health says CA’s court application not ‘factually correct’

23 Jul 2024

According to the Gauteng Health Department it has taken all necessary steps to address the backlog of cancer patients awaiting radiation therapy, reported Business Day (23 July 2024). This follows legal action by the Cancer Alliance, representing 30 cancer organisations, against the department to expedite the provision of radiation therapy to patients in Gauteng.
“The Alliance’s lawsuit focuses on the department’s alleged failure to utilise R784m
allocated in the 2023/24 budget to address the province’s radiation oncology and surgical backlog. The Alliance claims approximately 3,000 cancer patients are awaiting radiation therapy. The Cancer Alliance has requested the court to prevent the department from spending the R250m budget allocation until a review of its decision not to provide integrated radiation oncology treatment is completed.
“In court papers, Arnold Malotana the acting head of the department, stated that the Cancer Alliance’s application was factually incorrect and aimed to control the department through judicial means.”
