SA leads the world’s largest HIV prevention pill programme

15 Oct 2024

SA saw 150,000 new HIV infections in 2023 and aims to reduce this number to 105,000 by 2025 to meet UNAIDS targets, reported Bhekisisa (14 Oct 2024).
“By August this year 1.65m HIV-negative people in SA had used the anti-HIV pill at least once, making it the world’s most extensive HIV prevention programme.
“The oral PrEP pill, registered in 2015, is now free at almost all government clinics. The Health Department’s target for 2024/25 is to enrol 401,430 new PrEP users, with 20% remaining on the pill for at least six months.”
