Gauteng Health projected to underspend R725m

Gauteng Health is projected to underspend R725m in the 2025–26 financial year, with only R261m approved for rollover by National Treasury and R463.5m set to be returned to the national fiscus. - The Citizen (17 Jan 2026).
DA health spokesperson Jack Bloom has asked for urgent leadership changes and better use of Gauteng’s R67bn health budget to stabilise services.
The underspending has been blamed on project delays, late contractor invoices and procurement backlogs. Governance weaknesses are central to the crisis, including the absence of a permanent CFO for over three years, audit failures across key management areas. corruption allegations and ignoring Treasury warnings
In May 2025 Gauteng Health returned just over R1bn to National Treasury after health and education failed to spend allocated funds in 2024–25. The province reportedly was unable to spend R1.8bn in total, with R1.041bn coming from health and education.
