‘No intent to reduce the powers of provinces over state hospitals’
25 Mar 2025
News24 reported on 25 March that DA MPL Memory Booysen ‘raised critical questions in the provincial legislature regarding the projected effects of the NHI legislation’. The inquiries focused on the financial implications, patient choice in healthcare providers, and the overall quality of healthcare within public hospitals.
Concerns also included the administration, management, budgeting, and governance of central hospitals, such as Groote Schuur, Tygerberg, and the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospitals, which are slated to become national government competencies.
In response, National Health Department spokesperson Foster Mohale said there is no intent to reduce the powers of provinces over state hospitals, except for central hospitals, which are destined to become national government components.
Provinces will remain responsible for all other hospitals, ensuring they meet the accreditation and contracting requirements. The NHI Fund will accredit and contract state hospitals, with provisions for conditional accreditation for those not fully meeting requirements, ensuring continued service provision, said Mohale.
