Doctors are now able to detect tumours in routine X-rays, as well as TB in asymptomatic patients with AI tools like computer-aided detection (CAD) software outperforming human radiologists.
“However, AI’s effectiveness can vary, depending on the data it’s trained on, and SA’s healthcare infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, might not be ready for widespread AI deployment.”
“Additionally, issues like data security, system interoperability, and the need for local expertise in AI are critical as the country moves forward. careful planning and regulation are essential to ensure these technologies are effective and equitable.”
